DIARY OF A MADMAN is a second solo album by original Black Sabbath vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. It was recorded from the 9th of Feb to the 23rd of March 1981 inclusively - the end of winter in the U.K. and recording ending just into spring equinox. It was released on November 7, 1981. This was the last album with Randy Rhoads before his death in 1982. Although bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Tommy Aldridge are credited, it was bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake who performed all bass and drum parts on the original release. They were not given credit for their contributions. According to a 2005 interview with Daisley, even though Don Airey is credited for having played keyboards on this record, it was in fact a musician named Johnny Cook who recorded the keyboard parts, as Airey was unavailable at the time. The album features several songs with acoustic/classical guitar intros, including "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll", "S.A.T.O.", "Tonight", and the title track.
Released three years after Osbourne's departure from Black Sabbath, DIARY OF A MADMAN turned out to be a true metal masterpiece showing that Ozzy could not only make it on his own, but exceed his former bandmates in popularity.
"Over The Mountain" rumbles in and features the often imitated-never duplicated soloing of Randy Rhoads. The man is arguably the most influential guitarist in heavy rock besides Eddie Van Halen. "Flying High Again" follows, and is Ozzy's ode to non-stop partying. "Tonight" is a wonderful ballad, showing Randy's tasteful restraint. "S.A.T.O." is vintage Osbourne, with metal riffage only he can deliver. The title track begins with beautiful electric and acoustic guitar overdubs, and concludes the record with bombast. It is clear the Ozzman is at his peak on this album. DIARY OF A MADMAN shows why he will forever be the Godfather of Heavy Metal.
