Machine Head (1998) (RMST) (EXPANDED) (11 BONUS TRACKS) (25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION) Deep Purple
Album Description:
MACHINE HEAD is English rock band Deep Purple's sixth studio album. It was recorded at the Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland, in December 1971, with the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, and released in March 1972. The album is often cited as influential in the development of the heavy metal music genre. It is Deep Purple's most successful recording, topping the charts in several countries following its release. In 2001, Q magazine named it as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time.
MACHINE HEAD is the subject of one of the Classic Albums series of documentaries about the making of famous albums.
The album reached #1 in the UK, where it stayed for twenty weeks in the top-40. It also reached #7 in the US, remaining for 118 weeks in the Billboard 200.
Hiring the Rolling Stones Mobile One equipment and studios, the band recorded the entirety of the tracks in a Montreux hotel facility. This was due to the strict time frame they had before the deadline of their album's release. The "Smoke on the Water" lyrics refer to Frank Zappa's show at a nearby casino. The album was originally intended to be a live album to be recorded there. However, the casino burned down a few days before the start of scheduled recording sessions. A song entitled "When a Blind Man Cries" was recorded during these sessions, but not included on the album. Instead, it was used as a the B-side on the "Never Before" single. The song appears here as a bonus track. The supporting tour for Machine Head included a trip to Japan that would later become the double-live MADE IN JAPAN album.
MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the 70's, 80's, 90's and beyond. The lone presence of "Smoke on the Water" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.
