SLIP OF THE TONGUE is an album by the heavy metal band Whitesnake, released in 1989. This is the band's ninth studio album overall. It features Grammy-award winner Steve Vai on guitars. Four singles were released from the album: "Fool for Your Loving", "Slip of the Tongue" "The Deeper the Love" and "Now You're Gone". All the singles hit the Mainstream Rock Tracks top 40, and "The Deeper the Love" and "Fool For Your Loving" were top 5. SLIP OF THE TONGUE has sold over four million copies (quadruple platinum).
U.K. hit "Fool for Your Loving" originally appeared on the READY AN' WILLING album, but it was re-recorded for this album later to become an instant MTV favorite.
When it became known that Vivian Campbell had left Whitesnake and been replaced by six-string master Steve Vai in 1989, the rock world and guitar fans everywhere waited with bated breath for the new line-up's first album together. Vai was supposed to join forces with Whitesnake's other guitarist, Adrian Vandenberg, but a freak injury to Vandenberg's hands prior to the sessions meant that Vai handled all the guitar duties himself.
SLIP OF THE TONGUE was another hit -- the band, and especially singer David Coverdale, was once again in fine Zeppelin-esque form. Such raunchy rockers as the album-opening title track, "Cheap An' Nasty," and "Kittens Got Claws" fitted in well with the then-thriving party/glam metal climate.
